Energy efficiency of cold stores
In Europe there are 60-70 million cubic metres of cold storage for food. In 2002, the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) – estimated that cold stores use between 30 and 50 kWh/m3/year (1). Data collected in New Zealand by Werner et al (2) showed that the energy used by cold stores varied by a far greater level with specific energy varying from 20 to 425 kWhm-3year-1. Work to examine the efficiency of the operation of cold stores has previously shown that energy savings of generally 30% and up to 60% were achievable by optimising usage of the stores, repairing current equipment and by retrofitting of energy efficient equipment (3, 4, 5).
