IFST’s Food Law Group column - What is the current regulatory status of dietetic foods?

Suzane Leser gives an update on behalf of the IFST Food Law Group

Dietetic foods, also called PARNUTS, are regulated under Framework Directive 2009/39/EC, but the environment is due to change. Dietetic foods currently include a wide range of products specifically designed to fulfil the particular nutritional needs of certain groups of the population, such as: infant and medical nutrition, ‘gluten-free’ and ‘lactose-free’ products, slimming foods, as well as sports nutrition products.
